Varsity Boys
Pope 1 – Lassiter 5
The Varsity Boys team took on the Lassiter Trojans last Friday night, and gave a great effort. Franklin Robinson scored the first goal of the evening in the first two minutes of the game; off a beautiful cross from Collin Huber. That was the only goal of the half.
The second half saw lots of call go the Trojans way. A PK and a red card issued to the Greyhounds meant the team would have to play most of the second half trailing by one, and playing a man down. To their credit, they played hard, and actually had more shots on goal in the second half, than they did in the first. But the odds were stacked against them, and the unbalanced line up took its toll.
Varsity Girls
Pope 5 – Lassiter 0
The Perfect Storm hit Lassiter on Friday night. I said early in the week that the Greyhounds would have to pull it all together to beat Lassiter, and did they ever. The 5-0 victory was the most lopsided win in quite a while. The Greyhounds remain undefeated and un-scored on.
The Defense once again, did its job shutting out Lassiter, as Sarah Rose stepped up her game and made at least three diving saves to the keep Lassiter off the score board.
The midfield went through several formation changes, and by half time they found the combination that allowed them to lock up the passing lanes and move the ball forward.
As for the Offense, well let’s just say that Jessie Sexton was smoking hot. Jessie accounted for all five goals before taking a seat on the bench. Jessie scored off passes from Randi Schroedel, Emily Gaid, Katie Gieger, and Patricia Tancredi. Lassiter helped out as well, as a mis-directed header setup Jessie in front of the goal.
Next week Pope takes on Region foe Alexander in both JV and Varsity action. Come on out to support the teams!
